The historic acquisition of the Robert Mapplethorpe Archive by LACMA, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Getty Research Institute brought an astonishing array of works of art into the collections of all three institutions. At the same time, the archive included letters, studio logs, model releases, photographic negatives, personal mementos, pornographic magazines, and Mapplethorpe’s earliest creations, many of which exist at the intersection of “art” and “archive.” This in-gallery conversation will focus on the diverse archival materials included in the exhibition “Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Medium.” The discussion will explore Mapplethorpe’s use of print culture in his collage practice, and address the historical relationship between queer art making and appropriation strategies. This conversation will be led by David Evans Frantz, curator of the ONE Archives, and Ryan Linkof, associate curator of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures (formerly assistant curator at LACMA).
