In their fifth album ¡Live! (ita music 2016), Cascada de Flores reimagines tradition through individual expression and musical communication. With the essence, perhaps, of the jazz musicians that they so admire, the Sextet swims the waters (some uncharted) that lap the shores of Mexico, the Spanish Caribbean and even the north with its big bands and ballads. With simple arrangements that allow space for improvisation and pure expression the musicians expertly pulls the listener into the boleros, malagueñas, afros and danzones; the music becomes personal and communal.

Cascada de Flores features CMC faculty members Arwen Lawrence — voice, zapateado and Jorge Lineage — guitars; who claim 17 years of playing delicious, acoustic Latin music together. In their new albums Radio Flor (2014) and ¡Live!, they are expertly supported by pillars of the San Francisco traditional music and latin jazz scene. Saúl Sierra-Alonso — bass and Marco Díaz — piano, trumpet are composers for and members of the John Santos Sextet and multi-talented percussionist Brian Rice is a member of Mike Marshall’s Choro Famoso as well as co-founder of the new annual Berkeley Choro Festival. Cascada celebrates the addition of Kyla Danysh on violin, a Berkeley native who contributes to sweet old melodies and improvised conversations with her own voice, steeped in klezmer, classical and son mexicano.

¡Live! is an album of tributes and Cascada’s supportive fans receive the highest honor. [From the liner notes:] Dedicated to the friends, family and fans that support our crazy dreams: “I had a joyful dream. I wanted to make it a song, so I grabbed my guitar, and put in it all of my heart, thinking of you. Listen, sweet one, to what I wrote.” (From Bajo de Un Palmar, Pedro Flores)
