The Del Sol String Quartet returns to Harrison House with a musical program in tribute to composer Lou Harrison. The concert will include Harrison’s String Quartet Set, with music by his contemporary Ben Johnston, and compositions, arranged by Robert Hughes, that were composed collectively in the 1940’s by Virgil Thomson, Henry Cowell, John Cage and Lou Harrison.

The Del Sol String Quartet is a San Francisco-based ensemble which explores the link between social change, technology and artistic innovation. They were hailed by Gramophone Magazine as “…masters of all musical things they survey.” The New York Times described their playing as “a hypnotic sound world well worth exploring.” Del Sol’s performance projects and chamber music programs explore narratives and cultures from around the world, reflecting the stories and sounds of the Pacific Rim as vibrantly as those heard in European concert halls or East Coast art spaces. The quartet is comprised of Benjamin Kreith (violinist), Rick Shinozaki (violinist), Charlton Lee (violist) and Kathryn Bates (cellist).

In addition to recording eight critically acclaimed, full-length albums, the Del Sol String Quartet has commissioned and premiered over 100 works from a diverse range of international composers, including Terry Riley, Mason Bates, Gabriela Lena Frank, Chinary Ung, Mohammed Fairouz, Tania León, Ken Ueno, Peter Sculthorpe, Reza Vali, and Per Nørgård.

We hope you will join us and begin our celebration of Lou Harrison’s Centennial year that will culminate on his actual 100th birthday May 14, 2017 with a global day of art and conservation (save the date and plan to plant trees and make art wherever you are on that day!).
