Throughout all indigenous cultures the primal power of the drum has been used as a key to open the doorway to realms of non-ordinary time and space. Sacred rhythm can lift us out of our everyday experience of life and self toward heights of non-ordinary awareness through trance and form. This ancient technique is not lost to contemporary people, but something we can still access today.
This special Inspiration Series event, led by acclaimed percussionist Jim Santi Owen, will be an experiential exploration of the archetypal power of rhythm through the medium of the voice, body, and drum.
Jim Santi Owen has been drumming since he was 8 years old. Growing up as a Jazz drummer, he has been a student, performer, and teacher of the classical percussion traditions of India since 1991. He has undertaken and successfully completed two Chillas, 40-day musical solitary retreats in which a musician practices up to 18 hours a day. He holds an MFA in Music from the California Institute of of the Arts, teaches at the California Jazz Conservatory and the Ali Akbar College of Music, and leads workshops using the power of rhythm to explore the processes of dying, death, and grief.
