West Coast goes Karelia! California-based composer-saxophonist Rent Romus and Americanized trumpet master Heikki Koskinen are bringing to Finland a new composition based on the Kalevala Manala. Thematic material, free improvisation by the band and soloist, and Kalevala verses sung and uttered in Finnish weave into an unprecedented entity. The top line-up includes saxophonist Mikko Innanen, bassist Eero Tikkanen, and Heikki Laitinen, emeritus professor at the Sibelius Academy’s Folk Music Department and a well-known performing artist. Unlike the standard bass, this time Eero Tikkanen replaced Teppo Hauta-aho.
Manala which means netherworld in the Finnish language is a journey representing a deep cultural rediscovery through the lens of music. Co-written and produced by composers Rent Romus and Heikki Koskinen, this original suite of music weaves the elements of jazz, neo traditional Finnish, and free improvisation inspired by the mythic prose, rune poetry, and songs of cultural liberation and identity found in the Finnish epic known as the Kalevala and the folklore of Finno-Ugric cultural shamanic traditions.
